I am delighted to have joined the c’s at Acorn Safety Services at such an interesting time. Acorn has bold ambitions for the future, specially around its legionella microorganisms services, and I can’t wait to be part of it.
I’ve put in many years working in the river industry, in water system and remedials and more lately gaining valuable knowledge carrying out legionella risk checks.
I’ve already been on the road meeting our clients face-to-face, and also I’m really looking forward to developing these important connections.
‘What is legionella bacteria and also am I at risk?’
Legionella germs is microscopic and can be found in streams, waters, reservoirs and waters, usually in very low numbers, where they don’t cause any difficulties. The difficulty comes if these tiny bacteria get trapped inside your water system and also multiply, potentially bringing about Legionnaires’ Disease.
According to the Govt, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Ailment in the UK in 2019. It’s a critical illness which can be lethal – symptoms to know include fever, frustration, cough and difficulty breathing.
While legionella bacteria could cause problems anywhere due to the right conditions, some areas such as places where water is stored or recirculated, the place that the water temperature is between 20-45°C or where corrosion, sludge, scale and also organic matters exist, are considered to be from much higher risk.
Those people who are more susceptible to contamination, including the elderly the ones with weakened immunity processes, need to be especially careful.
‘So, what can I do to shield myself and those all around me?’
Employers, the self-employed, facilities managers, health and safety officers and property owners, are all among those who’ve a duty to protect men and women against the risks related to legionella bacteria.
The rules around legionella bacteria are really sophisticated and testing should be carried out by an expert * this is where Acorn Safety Companies can really help.
