Should you Pursue your Master’s Degree within the Military?

OPINION: I’m sure after reading the title most people who have not served will assume it’s a no-brainer. I mean the military is spending money on your education. Organizations like Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) have tens of thousands of lobbyers advocating for service women and men. Utilize this type one decide not to earn their Master’s degree? Well…I will explain now, neither I nor anybody else can answer that after it comes to speaking for that mass.

The Military are suffering from the ability to meet individuals all areas of life. Finding yourself in air Force (that we believe it’s the identical for all branches), everyone’s story differs. Maybe you enlisted using your associates or bachelor’s degree already and now you’re trying to strengthen knowing about it. Or maybe you honestly must check a box for professional development. In accordance with the Air Force Demographics, Air Force enlisted members only account for 1.8% of master’s degree when compared to 46.3% of these officers. This statistic emphasizes the varying education levels between people who find themselves enlisted vs officers.

BUT WHY NOT

Now, why would any serviceman or woman elect not to pursue traditional learning? Again these circumstances cannot speak for everyone, but merely just snapshot of the items We’ve experienced both personally and thru your eye area of my peers. Usually, one of the most challenging obstacle proves to be time, specifically duty diary for shift workers. The majority of active duty members who take benefit from educational benefits may attend online classes due to an unpredictable schedule. Determined by your learning style this will likely become another barrier when compared with traditional learning environments. With time being unpredictable obstacles inevitably arise, such as using a family, households where single parents serve, single parents, etc. All circumstances vary, but there are always challenges along this rocky road.

Twelve years into my service i had (Permanent Change of Station) PCS into my eighth assignment, excluding deployments. Each assignment provided its very own struggles; including instances when I had been scheduled for duty sunrise to sunset – or even the opposite. Another hurdle for Armed Forces members could be the uncertainty of continuing inside their current industry post service. There are some career paths that benefit from permission or certification rather than a graduate degree. Or possibly one joined the intend to avoid a formal educational setting, but wind up required to participate in traditional learning environments over expected.

Why you need to

Equally as I gave you main reasons why service members elect not to continue their education (or at best put up a battle), there are in the same way a number of, or even more, why they need to. Personal growth can be purchased through countless platforms but let’s be honest if it’s not documented through the right institute the validity of your degree or certification declines. There’s more than simply adding your reputation with a certificate; it’s gaining the technical knowledge of your respective field. It’s another few proving your dedication through any additional step, letting others know you’re taking yourself seriously and are going to the chief level.

Why wouldn’t anyone want to expand his or her knowledge inside their dedicated field of? There is a common assumption that you’re “in the field” experience lets you really view the how to go about the part. The expectation is one has a great grasp on how things work in their current field, higher education increases the possiblity to go to a different side of the industry. No matter what field you’re in, those who get yourself a degree in higher education set out to stick out and are considered the expert. Let’s face it, post-service tasks are not what you used to be. So why not takes place education as being a return on your investment – of yourself.

WHY DID I?

Like the tastes service members We’ve faced the identical obstacles discussed. I have been through eight assignments and diverse deployments including Pakistan and Iraq. Even though it was difficult, it turned out both a personal choice and accomplishment I thought I could not achieve. My ambition came from planning to set the bar for my family, and persuade myself I could complete my Master’s degree from Liberty University while serving. Lastly, I needed to cultivate professionally, expanding my knowledge and reaching an executive level within my potential industry.

Ultimately, while serving inside the military to be able to juggle both roles of student and Airman is essential. While serving being experienced in your employment will always be the main focus. Depending on the push from every one of the branches leadership will drive how soon members move towards pursuing education while serving. In the event the world is conflict school might take a backseat. As a result of high operation tempos in select job areas, scheduling is something you have to consider when deciding to pursue a continued education. Like anything, the commitment to a graduate degree is ultimately the decision of the individual who aspires to produce their very own educational path.
